U11's - Warriors v London Scottish
It was a cold January morning on a pitch far, far away in Richmond. In a friendly fixture, following joint training, the Warriors again showed their desire and commitment as well as their growing skill and tactical understanding. Warriors ran in seven tries in the first two quarters before the teams were mixed into Barbarian squads.

Quarter 1 tries came from:
  • 1. Oliver G - coming from a solid scrum and an terrific half break by Olly Carter (one of several on the day) at scrum half and a long mazy run from Ed G who off loaded in the tackle for Oliver to run over.
  • 2. Ed G (silky running skills reminiscent of old father Ted!)– confident following his earlier run, Ed set off again on a junking run through the middle following quick turnover ball from a ruck.
  • 3. Freddie (growing as a player every week) – A good pick and go as the forwards drove through the middle of the ruck.
  • 4. Ed F (pace & guile and – side stepped two tackles on a long mazy run from his own half.
  •

    Quarter 2 tries came from:
  • 5. Oliver G (another excellent all-round performance) – started the second quarter as he had the first. From our scrum the ball moved quickly through the backs to Oliver who broke through the gain line and could not be stopped.
  • 6. Dylan, (who tackled superbly all match) – A good pick-up from turnover ruck ball, he burst through several tackles to force his way over.
  • 7. Jacob (another strong all-round performance in defense and attack) - a fabulously worked team try - the ball was turned over at a line-out, palmed back to Jacob who sent it down the back line. James (had his best match of the season so far, hitting the line at pace and timing his passes well) - running an excellent line and just as he has been coached to do took the ball at pace, crossing the gain line and heading back towards the forwards. James broke clear and with the London Scottish defense covering across Jacob ran an inside line and took a wonderfully timed offload from James before crossing the line for try seven. A great try was greeted warmly by supporters from both sides.
  •

Quarter 3 tries for the Barbarians came from:
  • 8. George B – following quick ball from an increasingly dominant scrum and a good pass from Jacob and a well timed run blind by James who drew the last defender and timed his pass perfectly to George (strong running and an excellent tackle on Oliver G in the last match) put in a side step and went over in the corner for a super try.
  •

Quarter 4 tries for the Barbarians came from:
  • 9. Jacob – from a turnover in open play Jacob spun through two tackles and drove across the line to conclude the scoring.
  • 10. Freddie - The only try for the opposing Barbarians team was scored by Freddie following a tap penalty two meters from the line from which he showed great strength and determination to drive over and score.
  • 11. Henry (had an excellent marauding match and was very effective on the fringes of the breakdown) – In the dying seconds from a 5 meter scrum the ball was carried over by Jacob who popped the ball up in the tackle to Henry diving over to score the final points of the day.
  •

    Head Coach Roger Brosch commented:
  • ‘Although the opposition was not the strongest we will meet this season it was a really good all-round Warriors performance. The running was strong and mostly straight, the passing and offloading was much improved.
  • Our defense was strong as we have come to expect but we need to clear out a little more effectively at the breakdown and leave clean ball for our scrum half.
  • We are still trying to pick that ball up on occasions rather than ruck over and clear out. This will not work against stronger more organised teams.
  • Finally we are still trying to do a little too much individually. The next step for us is to really start to play as a team. We show it in patches particularly the two tries that James set up for Jacob and George. These showed that when we do play as a team we score some lovely tries but we also have too many occasions when we go into contact with players outside us in space. Teamwork is what we need to beat the really good teams we certainly have the individual skill an commitment.
  • Well done to all for a good performance.’

    U11's - Warriors v Old Ruts
Warriors Under 11’s celebrated victory in the inaugural Boxing Day curtain raising clash at Old Rutlishians.
It was a hard earned win by three tries to nil before a good crowd gathering to witness the traditional festive senior match between the two clubs.
Captained by hooker Thomas Bordessa, Warriors were determined to provide the perfect Christmas tonic with a fine passing display and an aggressive rucking game that grew stronger in the second half.
“It was an excellent all round performance,” said Head Coach Roger Brosch. “Some of our passing was among the best we have seen this season.”
Dylan Maas set the tone with a huge tackle on Old Ruts biggest forward to inspire Warriors who comfortably recycled possession to gain valuable territory throughout the match. Warriors played with great spirit, typified by the hard running Thomas Walsh, who was playing despite a nasty finger injury.
The visitors were duly rewarded when newcomer Ryan De Haviland stole over for a try after an excellent driving maul. The score gave Warriors a deserved one-nil halftime lead. The side looked well balanced with Rory Mortimer at full back, George Brosch in the centre and the hard tackling Matthew Mason (who made a two and a half hour journey to play) on the wing.
Coach Brosch called for more aggressive rucking in the second half and his team duly responded. Ed Gardener came on to play fly-half and Miles Peck barged over from short range to double their advantage.
Oliver Gestrin initiated the score that confirmed victory with a superbly powerful run that set up field position just short of the Old Ruts line. Dylan made sure Warriors took full advantage before Harry Davidson crashed over for the final score.
“It was great that we could give debuts in our strongest team to the likes of Ollie Carter, Lucas Carre and Maxime Berge and get such a good result. Overall it was very encouraging,” the coach added.

    U8's Squad
I am delighted to say that we qualified for the next round of the Etihad tournament. We won 2, drew 1 and lost 1.

    Matches:
    Wimbledon Warriors - 7 v Petersfield - 1
    Wimbledon Warriors - 4 v Sutton & Epson A - 1
    Wimbledon Warriors - 4 v Teddington - 4
    Wimbledon Warriors - 3 v Tonbridge Juddians - 5

A fantastic day out was had by all with great weather! They had a great start to the competition with some real rugby being played and very good to watch, unfortunately we slowed into the end and the last back to back was a bit much.

    The positives are:
    • Defence on first 3 tags was top class.
    • A real team effort to score tries (ie no solo efforts) - attitude, eagerness, teamwork.
    • Players in the team huddle being confident enough to start chipping in with motivational chat. Something along the lines of "if we believe in ourselves we can beat anyone"!

    U11's - 2 Teams
    Green Squad
    Pool games:
    Wimbledon Warriors - 1 v Teddington - 0
Greens got off to a winning start against Teddington. On a sloping pitch they worked hard uphill in the first half, playing well as a unit with some great passing. A mighty tackle from Ed Gardner early on halted a Teddington break away. Old WW used the slope to their advantage immediately after half time. George Brosch went over within minutes with Ed G coming close to scoring near the end. Some excellent distribution in the centre and great defence allowed the team to hold on to the lead.
    Wimbledon Warriors - 3 v Guernsey - 0
Greens continued their winning run with a thrilling 3-0 victory over the long distance travellers Guernsey. All the tries were scored in a blisteringly hot first half - both on and off the pitch. Ollie Carter ran over his first competitive try for OWW, after a cheekily taken quick tap penalty. Ed G followed him over after sustained pressure on Guernsey's line, and Harry Davidson slipped over with another quick penalty take. The second half - played up hill - was tougher with some very hard fought scrums for the front row Miles Peck, Benjamin French, Harry, with Mark Cronin supporting from behind. Max Thomas Mayes made some excellent runs, and Felix Bound came very close to scoring after a great move which saw the ball pass through hands right across the pitch.
    Wimbledon Warriors - 3 v Cobham - 2
OWW got off to a stuttering start when Cobham scored from a long kick off at the whistle. The ball tricked over the try line, and Cobham piled in for the touch down watched by bemused Warriors. The team recovered extremely well with intelligent play from fullback James Scott and excellent driving and mauling. Henry Ward in the second row was superb. Miles Peck went over to score first, quickly followed by Benjamin French after sustained pressure. At half time OWW had recovered to lead 2-1. The second half saw Ciaran Smith go on a storming run down the left wing, followed by a second try for Benjamin French under a pile of OWW bodies. Samuel Hilton in the second row added power. Cobham pulled the score back with a try in the last minute but by then OWW had done the hard work.
    Wimbledon Warriors - 0 v Guildfordians - 3
Old Wimbledonians final pool match was against the hosts and toughest opposition of the day, Guildfordians. Pitch 3 had become OWW fortress but Guildfordians managed to breach our defences. They got off to a quick start scoring the first of three tries after stealing the ball from our scrum. James Stott came close to scoring after catching a high kick and making a charge but Guildfordians scored immediately after the second half kick off with an individual effort by a speedy runner. OWW defended with some great driving - Sebastian Loosley making an impression when he came on as sub. But Guildfordians were unstoppable and scored again before the whistle.

Greens came 8th out of 24 teams, a fabulous effort on an energy sapping, scorching day.
